 OVERVIEW

The Friends and Elmira College are sponsoring a symposium Friday August 4 through Sunday August 6, 2023. Seven presentations cover a range of topics related to Elmira's Civil War history. Scheduled activities take place on the picturesque Elmira College campus. The Friday night social is in historic Cowles Hall located on the College grounds. Cowles Hallis the original campus building housing what was known at the time of the Civil War as the Elmira Female College. Saturday and Sunday presentations take place on campus. The keynote address and dinner Saturday night is at Hilltop Inn overlooking the Chemung Valley.There will be guided tours of the Barracks Number 3 site, John W Jones Museum, Woodlawn National Cemetery and the Chemung Valley History Museum, Saturday afternoon. The symposium is scheduled to officially concluse at noon on Sunday. Afterwards, attendees are invited to join the Friends at the Barracks Number 3 site for an Open House and local author book signing. Dormitory style accomodations are available Friday and Saturday night in Meier Hall on the College campus at a rate of $85.00 per night. Rooms are doubles with twin beds. The registration fee of $120.00 covers the seven presentations, Saturday breakfast, lunch and dinner, Sunday breakfast, keynote address, all guided tourdoor prize drawing throughout the weekend and participants receive a small momento made of reclaimed wood from an original camp building.

Parking
Info

Friday night parking is in the lot on McGee street. Use the south entrance facing the pond for Cowles Hall.

 

Saturday parking for the lectures is in the lot behind Meier Hall.

 

Saturday night a shuttle will be available from Meier to Hilltop at 5:30 pm & return at 8:30 pm. Local attendees are welcome to drive themselves if they so desire.
